Does Cogeco offer static public IP addresses?

No. Our public IP addresses are dynamic and are changing every couple of months.

Why someone would want a static IP address?

A static IP address is useful for specific activities, like running a small home server for file storage or hosting an online game. When you're away from home, you need to know your IP address to access your server.

Imagine if your home's street address changed without notice every few months. It would be inconvenient for people trying to find you! A static IP address works the same way—it's a fixed address that never changes, making it easy to connect to your home server.

Cogeco uses a cable modem technology that works with a DHCP server. The server assigns residential customers a dynamic IPv4 and IPv6 address that changes periodically. Cogeco also supports the allocation of multiple IPv6 addresses through a process called Prefix Delegation.

Finding your IP address

You can find your IP address at any time on websites such as whatismyv6.com.

Good to know: If you use a router, this procedure will provide you with the IP address of the router, not the device used to access the Internet.

Changing your IP address

Cogeco customers cannot change their IP address. IP addresses are dynamic, so they automatically change without notice. This is normal and does not affect your Internet service.
